Bright colors of blues, gold and reds show off innovations in printing allowing classical texts like this one to be read for the first time by a wider audience. This beautifully illustrated text was published in Latin more than 1,000 years after the author’s death and was the basis for all medical knowledge for hundreds of years thereafter. Galen (130-200 A.D.), a Greek physician to several Roman Emperors, synthesized the work of his classical predecessors and greatly advanced knowledge of anatomy, the circulatory system and surgery.
