Buffalo’s Rand Building on the Square

This undated postcard view shows off the massive Art Deco skyscraper, the Rand Building, built in 1929. To its right in this view is the 3,500 seat Lafayette Theatre (built 1922), acclaimed as a theatre and vaudeville house for its excellent acoustics. Though the Rand Building still dominates Lafayette Square today, the Lafayette Theatre eventually fell out of favor and was demolished in 1962 in favor of a parking lot.

Commemorating Buffalo’s Involvement in the Civil War

The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, erected in 1883 to remember Buffalo’s Civil War veterans, still holds court over Lafayette Square. This 1912 postcard view also highlights the Brisbane Building (built 1894-1896), anchored for many years on its first floor by the Kleinhans Men’s Store.
