About Us
The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, originally founded as the Young Men’s Association in 1836, today serves local residents through a network of 37 urban, rural and suburban libraries spread across Erie County in western New York State.
The Library’s Rare Books & Special Collections division stewards a remarkable collection of treasures including the original manuscript of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the gift by its author Mark Twain; rare maps; first editions of American and English literature; the peerless Milestones of Science collection encompassing the first-edition history of discovery by the world’s most influential scientists; a significant anti-slavery collection; sheet music, posters and prints; and local history scrapbooks. These priceless resources are the nucleus of one of America’s oldest libraries and one of the first to have a Rare Book collection. The basis for in-Library exhibits and programs, our treasures now can be shared and enjoyed in your office or home.
