Audubon's Quadrupeds: Arctic Fox
Audubon's Quadrupeds: Arctic Fox
Naturalist and painter John James Audubon (1785-1851) is best known for his Birds of America, the double size pages of beautiful ornithological images. Lesser known but equally ambitious is his work The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, featuring illustrations of four-legged mammals. Begun while working on the Birds, this project of 150 exquisite hand-colored lithographic plates took him ten years to complete, from 1839-1849. When the Quadrupeds were finished, Audubon was credited with another artistically stunning and scientifically significant contribution to our understanding of American natural history.
